Familienstand | Marital status

The maps illustrate the significant differences in family structures within Austria-Hungary. They show the proportions of single, married and widowed people in the population aged 14 and over at the time of the 1910 census. At one end of the spectrum are the Alpine regions, particularly the Alpine area itself, stretching from Vorarlberg to Upper Styria. The proportion of unmarried people reached more than 60 per cent in the districts of St. Veit (Carinthia) and Murau (Styria). In Upper Austria and the greater part of Lower Austria, too, the proportion of unmarried people was higher than in the other parts of Cisleithania. However, these rates were lowest in large parts of Hungary, including the greater part of Croatia and parts of Bosnia, with rates of unmarried people below 25 per cent. In general, the rates of unmarried people were higher in towns (identifiable on the maps as small dots, provided the towns were listed separately in the census as statutory towns or municipalities). The flip side of the rates of unmarried people is the rates of married and widowed people, as the proportion of divorced people was very low. The ratio of widowed to married people varied by region.
